Those of us in the search marketing industry are pretty familiar with handy keyword generator tools like Trellian, WordTracker and Overture Suggestion. Those of us that are not, please, get with the program!

I just started using Trellian’s Keyword Discovery tool and I must say that I’m quite impressed. In my opinion, it seems to offer a much broader selection of keyword features compared to those of Word Tracker or Overture. Supposedly, it’s database spans over 32 billion searches and obtains keyword data from close to 200 search engines worldwide. It also features: Related Keywords, Spelling Mistakes, Seasonal Search Trends Keyword Filter, Keyword Density and Export/Import Capabilities. I guess charging a monthly subscription fee of $49.95 is justifiable after all.

The one thing I would advise when using these tools is to PROCEED WITH CAUTION when estimating the number of searches you could personally obtain through your search marketing campaigns, whether paid or organic. I’m not implying that the search data is in anyway inaccurate, just realistically unattainable for most search marketers (unless you’re dealing with big budgets that allow you to dominate the search space). It’s advisable to set high goals and implement multiple campaigns, but when anticipating search volume, do take into account that typically only 20% of searches click on sponsored ads, 40% on organic listings and the rest are running search queries for research purposes.
