There is a lot of talk within the internet marketing community about social media marketing. So who is the best at this? Is is that snarky copywriter, Brian Clarke of copyblogger.com or Neil Patel of Pronet Advertising or maybe even Rand at SEOmoz.org?
No, the greatest living Social Media Marketer is Stephen Colbert of the Colbert Report. Hands down.
So, how do we prove this? It is easy– we look at the original 5 rules of SMO from Rohit.
1) Increase your linkability
I am not sure of Stephen Colbert could be any more linkable– unless he actually was text based content (which he will soon with his new blog) but people constantly play and link to his clips on YouTube or the Comedy Central website
2) Making Tagging and Bookmarking Easy
I’ll admit, Stephen doesn’t do this. Frankly, he doesn’t bloody need to. People will go out of their way to bookmark/digg/reddit his content.
3) Reward Inbound Links
With the mention of his new blog, he says that “any blog linking to his blog which corroborates what his blog says” will get a mention on his exceptionally popular national TV show. That may be the greatest reward for linking to his site ever. (If you’ll remember when Steven first mentioned Wikipedia, they had to lock down the elephant do to the insane number of visitors)
4) Help Your Content Travel
Again, this refers to having content that can be transferred to other sites (such as social media sites) this is something Stephen doesn’t even need to do. His passionate users do it for him, but it does produce buzz and links.
5) Encourage the mash-up
Stephen has done this on two occassions– the most popular being the first– where he asked viewers to take his green screen footage and turn it into a “Starwars Kid” style movie. He received more submissions then he could have ever suspected, by once again, promising to show it on his very popular TV show.
Who else can say they get as much love from the blogosphere?

I think this depends on what kind of audience you’re trying to attract. If you’re trying to gain credibility among other bloggers, I think your tips are spot on but if you’re looking to reach ma and pa consumer with a marketing message, social media is far removed from their vocabulary.
